Inservice

picture of woman presenting at an inservice meetingUpon request, Kansas school districts may receive ABI/TBI inservice training. Depending on school personnel needs, this training may consist of general TBI awareness training or focus on the specific needs of a student with ABI/TBI (e.g., when a student is re-entering school). ABI/TBI awareness training includes an explanation of the causes and consequences of ABI/TBI and provides strategies for school re-entry, scheduling modifications, and educational programming.

ABI/TBI inservice training may be delivered by local TBI miniteam members or project personnel. To request inservice training, Kansas school personnel should contact the TBI Project director, Janet Tyler, Ph.D.

Some of the presentations currently available for inservice training include:

  • Common Pediatric Disabilities
  • Family and Community Issues
  • Overview of ABI/TBI
  • Medical Aspects of TBI
  • School Re-entry for Students with ABI/TBI
  • Service Models for ABI/TBI

Technical Assistance

picture of a girl studyingKansas school districts serving students with ABI/TBI often require assistance in developing educational programs to meet the needs of these students. Trained ABI/TBI miniteam members or TBI Project personnel are available to provide technical assistance and consultation to school personnel in such cases. Services include assistance with identification of students, school re-entry planning, IEP development, scheduling modifications, educational programming, and longterm monitoring of students with ABI/TBI.

The TBI Project has also developed educational, vocational, and community resource listings and service descriptions, written materials, and presentations to help educators and families of students with ABI/TBI obtain needed information. To request technical assistance or consultation, Kansas school personnel should contact
Janet Tyler, Ph.D.

TBI Miniteams

TBI Miniteams consist of a variety of education and related services personnel (e.g., special education teachers, coordinators, administrators, and school-based psychologists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, speech language therapists). The size of the miniteam varies depending on the number of students who are served by the cooperative or school district.  Most miniteams have at least seven members, with larger districts and service centers having as many as 12 or more members.

The TBI Project has trained over 250 miniteam members in the area of ABI/TBI.  Each miniteam member is aware of and understands the unique characteristics and educational needs of students with ABI/TBI.  Miniteam members are dedicated to helping assure that Kansas students with ABI/TBI receive an appropriate education.  These miniteam members also have expert resource personnel available to provide technical assistance on a wide variety of individual cases.  Many miniteam members are also active in school-based brain injury prevention programs.

Inservice Training Module

The following inservice training module was developed to help educators, related service personnel, administrators, and families of students with TBI provide information to others about the effects of TBI.  The module can be ordered through the TBI Project.

The Traumatic Brain Injury Inservice Training Module: Complete inservice packet for a one to two hour training session that will help educators and related personnel understand (a) the incidence and causes of TBI among students (b) the mechanisms of brain injury (c) the recovery patterns of students with TBI (d) the immediate and long-term effects of TBI (e) the techniques used to help students with TBI re-enter school and (f) the educational modifications and instructional strategies used with students with TBI.  The Module includes presentation script and CD with Power Point presentation.

NOTE:  The videotapes listed below, which are sold separately, are recommended as companion resources to the module.

Videotapes

The videotapes below were designed to help regular and special education teachers, related service personnel, administrators, and families of students with TBI understand the long-term consequences of TBI in children and adolescents. The videotapes can be ordered through the TBI Project.

Perspectives on TBI: This videotape focuses on the subtle cognitive and psychosocial effects that may exist years after a brain injury. Interviews with an 8th grade student who is 2 years post injury, his family and teachers, illustrate the longterm educational and psychosocial difficulties students with TBI may encounter. Strategies and recommendations for successfully dealing with the life-long challenges associated with TBI are outlined in detail.   Suggestions for educational programming are provided.  Date: 1993     Running Time: 25 minutes.

Never Give Up!: This videotape provides case studies of two students who have had severe brain injuries. It traces the educational history of an elementary-aged student who had a stroke at the age of two, and a high school student who was involved in a pedestrian/motor vehicle accident at age 8. Through interviews with teachers and family members viewers learn of the constant struggle to meet the educational needs of students with ABI/TBI. Suggestions for developing programs for students with severe behavioral and cognitive problems associated with ABI/TBI are provided by parents and educators.  Date: 1994     Running time: 30 minutes.
